About the Journal

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Japanese Art, Design and Visual Studies (JACVS) is an international, peer-reviewed journal that supports scholarly, critical, and practice-based inquiry into art and visual culture. The journal aims to advance interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers, artists, designers, curators, educators, and cultural practitioners.

JACVS publishes original contributions examining historical and contemporary art practices in their cultural, social, political, technological, economic, and environmental contexts. It particularly welcomes comparative and interdisciplinary research, studies of underrepresented artists and artistic traditions, and contributions that challenge established narratives within art history and visual studies.

The journal’s objectives are to:

• Disseminate original and methodologically rigorous research in art and related disciplines.
• Connect theoretical scholarship with artistic, curatorial, and educational practice.
• Encourage dialogue across disciplines, cultures, regions, and artistic traditions.
• Increase the visibility of emerging researchers and underrepresented perspectives.
• Promote ethical, inclusive, and socially engaged approaches to artistic research.
• Examine the influence of technological, environmental, and social change on artistic production and reception.

The journal welcomes submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Art history, theory, criticism, and aesthetics
• Modern and contemporary art
• Painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics
• Photography, film, animation, and visual storytelling
• Digital art, new media, artificial intelligence, and virtual environments
• Graphic, industrial, textile, and communication design
• Architecture, spatial practices, and urban aesthetics
• Performing arts, theatre, dance, music, and performance studies
• Visual culture and interdisciplinary cultural studies
• Curatorial practice, museology, and exhibition studies
• Cultural heritage, conservation, and restoration

Publication Frequency

JACVS is published twice a year, with one issue released every six months. The journal may also publish special issues dedicated to significant themes, emerging areas of research, conferences, or collaborative projects.

Accepted articles may be published online ahead of their assigned issue when the journal’s continuous publication procedures permit. The journal may revise its publication frequency as its submission volume and editorial capacity develop.

Archiving

JACVS is committed to the long-term preservation and accessibility of its scholarly content. The journal’s digital archiving arrangements are intended to ensure that published material remains available in the event of technical failure, interruption, or discontinuation of the journal.

Published articles may be preserved through institutional repositories and recognized distributed preservation services supported by the journal’s publishing platform. Authors are also encouraged to archive the published version of their work in institutional or subject-based repositories, with a complete citation and DOI link to the version of record.

Indexing

As a newly established journal, JACVS is working toward inclusion in recognized scholarly discovery, abstracting, and indexing services. Applications will be submitted only after the journal meets the relevant service’s eligibility requirements and has established a consistent publication record.

The journal will provide accurate information about its indexing status and will not claim inclusion in any service before formal confirmation has been received.
