Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Sections

Research Articles

Research Articles publishes original and unpublished scholarly research addressing topics within the journal’s aims and scope. Submissions may employ historical, theoretical, critical, qualitative, quantitative, comparative, or interdisciplinary approaches to art, culture, and visual studies.

Research articles should present a clear research question, engage critically with relevant literature, explain the methodology or analytical approach, and offer an original contribution to the field.

Section policies

  • Submissions must be original and must not be under consideration by another publication.
  • Articles should normally contain between 5,000 and 8,000 words, excluding references.
  • Manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment.
  • Suitable manuscripts are subject to double-anonymized peer review by at least two independent reviewers.
  • Authors must anonymize their manuscripts before submission.
  • An abstract of 150–250 words and five to seven keywords are required.
  • Relevant images, figures, or other visual materials may be included.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce third-party material.
  • Research articles are indexed, assigned a DOI, and included in the journal’s published issues.
  • Submissions must comply with the journal’s research ethics, citation, originality, and disclosure policies.

Artistic and Visual Research

This section publishes practice-based, practice-led, and visually oriented research in which artistic production forms a central part of the research process or its outcomes. Submissions may examine creative methods, artistic experimentation, exhibitions, curatorial projects, performances, design processes, digital artworks, community art, or other forms of artistic practice.

Contributions should go beyond presenting or documenting an artwork. They must clearly explain the research context, objectives, creative process, methodology, critical framework, and contribution of the work.

 

Section policies

  • Submissions must contain original artistic or visual research that has not been published elsewhere in substantially the same form.
  • Written components should normally contain between 3,000 and 6,000 words, excluding references and captions.
  • Submissions may include images, illustrations, audio, video, animations, or links to supplementary digital materials.
  • Each submission must include an abstract of 150–250 words and five to seven keywords.
  • The relationship between the artistic practice and the research question must be clearly explained.
  • Submissions undergo an initial editorial assessment followed by double-anonymized review by at least two suitably qualified reviewers.
  • Reviewers may evaluate both the scholarly text and the submitted creative material.
  • Authors must obtain the necessary copyright permissions and informed consent for identifiable people, artworks, performances, and locations.
  • Any technical requirements for accessing supplementary material must be explained at submission.
  • Accepted contributions are assigned a DOI and published as part of the journal’s scholarly record.
  • The editors may request accessible descriptions, transcripts, captions, or alternative formats for audiovisual material.
